GOD’S STRENGTH TALK

Artist Francis Hollenkamp painstakingly placed 10,000 toy soldiers into squared rows and columns to present a visual representation of a large group. This installation even though it’s toys is pretty impressive. When I see this piece I think it can possibly be used as a unique way to demonstrate to students Psalm 91 and God’s strength.
“A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.” Psalm 91:7.

TALK PURPOSE

Students will leave the discussion gaining understanding about God’s strength in their life, for their fears, and with the world.

PROBLEM

We live in a world of extremes. We have a tendency to live within a moment to it’s fullest. When we’re up we’re up and when we are down it seems like God is not there.

POINT

In your life there is nothing that scares God. He is not afraid of your shame, guilt, worry, or doubt. He has the strength to show you what is really happening. It may be incredibly hard times that you are facing but God is incredibly strong.

PASSAGE

Psalm 91, Joshua 1:5, Romans 8:38-39

TRANSITION TO ILLUSTRATION

God’s strength is limitless. It’s hard to find words to describe how truly powerful he is. The fact that he does not need our approval of his power or our recognition shows you how calmly reserved and intentional he is. The Bible in Psalm 91:7 puts it this way, “A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.” I have never seen 10,000 soldiers gathered together in battle but I know it would be impressive. An artist recently sat down and painstakingly set 10,000 toy soldiers up in neatly placed squares and columns. These pictures show the results. That’s a lot of soldiers. If they were real men I might find a nice place to hide. But if real 10,000 forces gathered together against the Lord it would hardly be a threat.

In your life there is nothing that scares God. He is not afraid of your shame, guilt, worry, or doubt. He has the strength to show you what is really happening. It may be incredibly hard times that you are facing but God is incredibly strong.

Thanks for such a great talk idea. I plan to use it this Sunday with my teens. I am giving away little army men at the conclusion of the talk for my students to keep as reminders that God is stronger that the 10,000 that may oppose them.
