Here’s a great game submitted by Ben Read.

This game is basically dodgeball with a capture the flag element as well.

Set up a regular dodgeball game, then on the far end of either sides zone, place a cone with a small tennis ball sized ball on top ( we used stress reliever balls). This ball is called the pearl.

The point of the game is to either win regular dodgeball style, or win by getting the other teams pearl on your side.

At the beginning of the game, each team chooses a retriever, without the other team knowing, and this is the only person who can cross the line to go attempt to retrieve the pearl. Retrievers can not be tagged out, you still must hit them with a dodgeball to get them out. Retrievers can not attempt to get the pearl until at least a minute has passed.

We had to make the rule as well that a ball couldnt stay on your side for more than 15 seconds, because we had a few rounds end when one team just held on to all of the balls at the minute mark so their retriever could go get the pearl and the other team had no way of getting him out.

We also said that if your retriever got out, your team could choose to bump him to the front of the line to come back in if you caught a ball or not. And the retriever can run to the other side with a ball to defend himself.

Kids loved it, spiced up dodgeball quite a bit for them, and we just played first to 5 wins, because it does go by somewhat fast.

I use a combination of preview and picnik. It’s amateur hour here but I know how to build in layers. Sometimes I use Gimp a free version of photoshop. People would laugh if they saw how I did this.

Thanks for the heads up. It’s been fixed. I guess the blog author’s site was compromised.
