POOP DECK

Make sure you have a clear and clean playing field. You will need lots of space. Divide your playing area by it’s length into three equal zones. Tape masking tape to the floor to mark one third of your field then another strip of tape to mark your second zone and your third zone. Every “X” below represents a strip of tape running between your zones the width of the room.

The room has now become an imaginary ship and the leader is the captain. Zone 1 is “Quarter Deck.” Zone 2 is “Main Deck.” Zone 3 is “Poop Deck.” The captain of the ship will yell out a deck name. The students must run to that deck to be safe. If they are the last to step into a deck they are out. If they cross into the wrong deck they are out. A good captain uses voice inflection, points to the wrong deck, and is a master of misdirection. Last person left is the winner.

I’ve added a few additional things to this:
A smaller taped off box (or two): Lifeboats! (good to use when the numbers are getting smaller)
Getting off the ship: Abandon Ship! (everyone must clear all decks)
Everyone must lie down on the floor: Hit the deck! (again, save this one for when you are down to just a few)
Our junior high kids can play this for a looooong time!

I know this post has been up for a while, but my question is if the caller calls out Zone 1 (Quarter Deck) and then the next one he calls is Zone 3 (Poop Deck), how do the kids get from zone 1 to zone 3 with out “crossing into another deck” and therefor being out? I like the “lifeboat” and “Hit the Deck” ideas. Sounds fun!

The assumption is that if the captain calls it out then it’s a non issue to cross the main deck but don’t stay on the main deck or not head there at all.
